By: Emily A. Duncan

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Genre: High Fantasy, gothic

Synopsis: Darkness never works alone…

Nadya doesn’t trust her magic anymore. Serefin is fighting off a voice in his head that doesn’t belong to him. Malachiasz is at war with who–and what–he’s become.

As their group is continually torn apart, the girl, the prince, and the monster find their fates irrevocably intertwined. They’re pieces on a board, being orchestrated by someone… or something. The voices that Serefin hears in the darkness, the ones that Nadya believes are her gods, the ones that Malachiasz is desperate to meet—those voices want a stake in the world, and they refuse to stay quiet any longer.

This post will be spoiler free.

This book was just as dark and creepy and lush as the first one! I am in love with Emily’s writing style, I love that you never really know wha tall of the characters are up to, and they keep so many secrets even from us! This is such a twisted story full of dark characters and morally grey decisions, and I love the complexity that brings.

The characters were so well written, I felt their struggles and their torn relationships. This is not a happy story, it’s full of harsh decisions, betrayal, toxic relationships and gods that are as far from benevolent as you can get. This world is also incredibly well created. My one complaint of book one wa the world building fell a little flat, it felt like the story was prioritized and the political landscape wasn’t described as much as I would have liked. This book really remedied that. It took the characters out of the political sphere and threw them into the thick of the action.

The atmosphere of this book is what pulls you in and once it does good luck putting this book down. even snuggled up on my couch with a blanket and a tea I felt like I was in the cold mythical forests right alongside Nadya.

This is definitely not for anyone looking for a heartwarming story, but if you are looking for a dark fantasy that will keep you hooked and is full of twists and turns and characters that surprise you, this is the book for you! I know I can’t wait for book 3!
