After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world

This review will be spoiler free.

Oh my goodness, this was quite the rollercoaster of a book! I read Cruel Prince over a year ago, and I have had this book sitting on my shelf for a considerable amount of time. I was hesitant to start it, seeing as it had been so long since I read the first one. I should not have been worried, though this book jumps right back into the action, I found myself remembering a lot along the way, and the way it was written never made me feel lost or confused. Holly Black has this incredible way of spinning a story so that you never really know where each character stands. Just when you think you’ve understood who’s side everyone is on, you’re proven wrong.

Though this is primarily a political intrigue story, filled with fairies and other magical twists and turns, there was also some simmering romance added to the mix. I won’t say who since I promised this was going to be spoiler free, but let’s just say it is both satisfying and shocking! I really loved the balance that was struck between all the different elements and plot lines. The book was easy to get sucked into, and impossible to put down.

Jude is such an amazing and dynamic character, she might be going into my all time favourite characters after this book! Honestly, strong and independent female lead character, a mortal in a world of fairies holding her own?! what more can we ask for?? And Cardan, oh my gosh is it possible to love and hate a character all at once? Is he a villain? is he an anti hero? is he prince charming? I have no idea!

Don’t even get me started on the ending! Why Holly???? Why do you have to continue to torture us with these cliffhangers? I am actually happy it took me so long to read this book because I just realized that book three comes out this month so I barely have to wait for it! That is always the best feeling, there is nothing worse than reading a cliffhanger and then realizing that the next book doesn’t come out for over a year! I can’t wait to see wha the final book brings (at least I think it’s the last book), I am sure it will be amazing as well, considering that book 2 was almost better than book one (that does not happen very often with series). Have you guys read this book? what were your thoughts? let me know in the comments, I would love to hear your ideas about that cliffhanger.
