Renegades
By: Marissa Meyer
My Rating: 5/5 Stars
Genre: Superhero, Dystopia, anti-hero
Synopsis: Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.
The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone… except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

Oh my goodness ok this was another five star read (they are just raking up this year, I have had a very good run lately!). This book felt like it was made for me (does that sound weird?) I was so excited for a story that reminded me of X-men with dystopian aspects and of course its own twists. I loved Nova as a main character she was cunning and smart, but also very dynamic. I also loved that she was an anti-hero (almost), she may have technically been painted as a villain but I couldn’t hate any of the Anarchists, they were all doing what they thought was right and it was hard to fault them for that. I was all set to hate the Renegades but I just couldn’t do that either! This book took the traditionally black and white dynamic of villains versus superheroes and made it more complex and realistic. Not all heroes are good and not all villains are inherently bad.
This book had twists and turns, character development and just enough world building. I really can’t say enough good things about this book, just go out and read it! I mean if superheroes and dystopia aren’t your thing you don’t have to read it, but I would recommend giving it a try anyways.
***SPOILERS***
The biggest jaw dropping moment was at the very end when we found out that the big bad (Nova’s uncle) Ace Anarchy is in fact alive and well. I can’t wait to see what this will mean for the sequel! I am also interested to see how Nova and Adrian’s relationship will change, especially if he ever finds out she is the illusive Nightmare he was so obsessively hunting. I liked their little almost romance, but I also liked that Nova stayed true to herself. She didn’t all of a sudden become a hero and abandon the villains that raised her, she never let go of her goals or principals, even though she began to really like the Renegades she was partnered with. I guess we will just have to wait and see what the next book entails! (Also if by some magical chance the Macmillan Publishers read this post, I would love an ARC for Arch-Enemies!)
What were your thoughts on Renegades? I would love to hear from you guys!
I loved Renegades too! I cannot WAIT to see how the story expand in Archenemies!
