Synopsis: Saba has spent her whole life in Silverlake, a dried-up wasteland ravaged by constant sandstorms. The Wrecker civilization has long been destroyed, leaving only landfills for Saba and her family to scavenge from. That’s fine by her, as long as her beloved twin brother Lugh is around. But when four cloaked horsemen capture Lugh, Saba’s world is shattered, and she embarks on a quest to get him back.
Suddenly thrown into the lawless, ugly reality of the outside world, Saba discovers she is a fierce fighter, an unbeatable survivor, and a cunning opponent. Teamed up with a handsome daredevil named Jack and a gang of girl revolutionaries called the Free Hawks, Saba’s unrelenting search for Lugh stages a showdown that will change the course of her own civilization.
The first section of this review will be spoiler free.
I picked up this book because first, I love a good dystopian novel, and second because the cover really drew me in. The story itself was interesting enough but I couldn’t get past the weird writing style. The story is written through Saba’s perspective and since her english is very broken and filled with slang words and odd contractions, that is how the book is written. For me it detracted from the story because it prevented me from really getting into the book. I think it would have been fine if some of Saba’s talking had been written in the distorted english but not the whole book. Overall I didn’t connect with Saba as a main character and her relationship with her brother didn’t make me care enough about his fate to really get invested in it. This is a trilogy so maybe the story gets better as the series goes on? but I wasn’t hooked enough by the first book to continue reading.
The character development (at least for me) was average at best. Saba went through some changes for sure, but Jack and the others stayed more or less static. I enjoyed the world building, even if it was a bit confusing at times. I think if you don’t mind the weird writing style you may actually enjoy this book, sadly I just couldn’t look past it.
No spoiler section for today, This book is pretty straightforward so I don’t want to accidentally spoil the few good twists it has! but I want to hear from you guys, have you read this book? what were your thoughts? let me know in the comments.
